Value

Image002

This is a 200.00 dollar tow of our burned out car. But here’s the catch: we were paid the

200.00 for the final tow of our car’s life.  Granted, the car was worth more to us “alive”

than “dead” but to think some one would actually still see enough value in this charred hunk

of metal, plastic and rubber to pay for it was amazing to us.

Wait…I think I was a charred hunk of flesh when someone bought me…and HE gave way

more than a mere 200.00 bucks – He gave His very life.

I have value!!!!

Thanks!

Burning

Today marks the end of a good and faithful friend. May it rest in peace.

No one was injured…

It happened during the soccer game between the US and Slovenia…

By the time the game was over our friend that was using our van came out in time to see it burn.  No one knows why or how it started.

Our liability only Insurance is of no use of course. It’s more than a total loss because it was towed and impounded at the owner’s expense (that would be us).

Though it is a hassle to deal with, it’s a loss of one of our modes of transportation, and it was an unexpected blow to our wallet, we are reminded where our treasures are stored… NOT here on earth where they will all eventually burn.

A moment of vision..

Raymond is a Vet from the Korean War which is sometimes known as the Forgotten War due to the ease that we as a country forget that that war actually occurred.

Though it was a short war, about three years long, it was a deadly war.

3 years 54,000 American lives lost in Korea while the Vietnam War of nearly 18 years lost nearly 58,000 American’s.

Don’t worry, this is really not about the “Forgotten War” but it is about one of this war’s forgotten heroes: Raymond.

Matt and I met Raymond one day in the park. He approached us as we sat a picnic table talking. He asked if we could help him to adjust his radio to a particular station. He needed help because he could see the radio well enough to do himself – he was legally blind.

We asked what had happened to cause his blindness: “I got hit in the head during the war”

He was humble and not at all self focused but he was lamenting the gradual loss of his eye sight.

He explained further that there may be hope though the Veterans Administration to gain his sight back but it was hard to navigate that journey especially when you are homeless.

Raymond stayed upbeat as he pointed across the park at a woman with a shopping cart and explained that he was thankful that he had a Seeing Eye girl friend that made life possible.

Matt and I really wanted to help this humble man that most had forgotten… We told him that we had no resources but what we had we give to you if you will accept it. He allowed us to lay our hands on him and pray…so we prayed and he wept with joy.

Matt saw Raymond more than I did but we both enjoyed out new friend and kept praying for him.

The next sentence should talk about how he regained his sight…but as far as we know he hasn’t received his eye sight yet and in fact he lost more of his vision…

You see, his Seeing Eye girl friend who supplied vision for Raymond died a few months after this encounter…a brain clot quickly took her life.

Matt saw Raymond shortly after she died and he was sad. But we haven’t seen Raymond since and that makes us sad. But both Matt and I take joy in knowing that we had a moment to extend God’s Kingdom toward Raymond in prayer and friendship… it makes both Matt and I SEE each moment with others as His appointment.

PS Matt is a great friend and life partner. He and his amazing (and pregnant) wife Amy and their cool kid Nolan are part of NeiuCommunities with us.

Jerm and Kaory:

(Thanks Amy Chapman for Amazing photos)

June 26th both Jeremy and Kaory will graduate from High Tech High Media Arts.

They are currently finishing internships with their school:

Jerm is recording an album with a fellow student. Jerm is playing several stringed instruments and engineering the album while his friend is writing and singing. Cool huh? (They may be playing a the House of Blues coffee Shop 6/23)

Kaory is assessing, inventorying and maintaining the schools community organic garden. We eat some great veggies right now and she is learning tons. Cool huh?

June 27th their panic with what to do with their lives will grow to intense levels.

Here are their plans for now:

For the equivalent of their first semester in college (approx late August to early December 2010) they have a plan. The intent with this plan is to seek God, grow up a little more and just get close to the ONE they want to serve the rest of their lives.

For Jerm:

That will be a several month mission internship in South Africa under CRM’s Interchange division which responds to the poor of the world.

When he returns, he hopes to enter the local community college and pursue something associated to music.

For Kaory;

That will be a stint in a bible school in Kansas City, MO.

When she returns she would like to enter a University somewhere and pursue a four-year degree in whatever God has put on her heart.

For us:

It means a calmer house…two less teens and great time with Josh who will be a Junior in High Tech High Chula Vista.

But really what that means is an empty place in our hearts that both Kaory and Jerm have filled for 18 years.

It will be hard to let them go and grow. To not see them daily and in Jerm’s case not be able to even pick up the phone to see how he is doing.

It’s a step of faith for the entire Sheahan family. A big change. A good change. A hard change.

Summer: We really hope to make this summer count for our family – we have no idea what that means yet but we hope to find out. We do know that we have a 21/2 week conference with our mission. This occurs every 4 years and this is the 4th year. We will be going to Malaysia for the conference.

NieuCommunities part of CRM Empowering leaders

Last Sunday our mission community had a day of inviting.

First it was a picnic in the park. Who was invited? Everyone from the homeless that walk up and down the streets, to the up and coming business brats that sip coffee in the coffee shops to shut ins and outcasts.

Who came? Some of the above though the homeless were a bit intimidated by us.

That evening we held a time of worship. The room was filled. It was an amazing time.

I think our attempt at reaching out and inviting in was a great start and something we as a community of believers will attempt to continue doing. Do we need to learn a few things still? Yep. But we seem to learn best by just going for it.
